| * In ancient Greece, spectators cheered for athletes during
the first Olympic Games.

Students
in Great Britain began cheering at competitive sporting events
and soon the idea spread to the United States.

The first
first-known cheer was recorded at Princeton University. The
first "yell" was: Ray, Ray, Ray! Tiger, Tiger, Tiger! Sis,
Sis, Sis! Boom, Boom, Boom! Aaaaah, Princeton! Princeton!

| * 1898:

Organized
cheerleading started at The University of Minnesota during a
football game.

| * 1920's:
|
The
evolution of cheerleading into a sport began as cheerleaders
incorporated gymnastics and tumbling into their cheers.

Introduction of (paper) pom-pon routines. Original name
was "pom-pom".

| * 1960's:

The vinyl
pom-pon was invented.
|
| * 1967:
|
Pee wee
and youth league cheerleading developed as an activity and
were added to Pop Warner Football.
